The Davidson Horticultural Symposium began in 1985 as a joint volunteer effort by the Davidson Garden Club and several faculty and staff members of Davidson College, with the objective of providing affordable continuing education in the field of horticulture. The annual event, highly anticipated by professional and amateur gardeners alike, features presentations by nationally and internationally known speakers selected to reflect diversity and thought leadership within the horticulture field.

The Symposium has earned a reputation for excellence, and the Club was adamant that its website be easy to use and look inviting.

To give visitors quick access to event details and allow them to register for the Symposium online, I developed a WordPress website. Garden Club members update the site each year with new speakers and information. Because the Garden Club did not have a logo, I created an elegant typographic treatment for the site masthead. Garden Club members provided photography of their gardens. I chose a natural color palette to complement the photos, and I added subtle typographic flourishes as a nod to the academic roots of the event. The resulting site is both beautiful and functional, and the Garden Club was very pleased with the results.
